Chronology of cameras Stegemann
The Stegemann Hand-Camera was delivered in two stereoscopic sizes – 9 x 13 and 9 x 18 cm – and in the version with wood struts from circa 1897 and version with metal struts from 1905. The construction is similar to the regular Hand-Camera, with uncovered polished blackened wood, articulated wooden struts, and Lewinsohn focal plane shutter with external slit control. The lens panel is sliding for stereo and panoramic images. The leather bellows are single pleated. The camera used double dark slides or plate magazine.
This specimen has the shutter brake mechanism in the shutter, patented by Stegemann in 1902. This mechanism is regressive and functions by friction on a helical surface, which increases speed on the upper part of the picture (lower frame) with the intention of better exposing the sky in orthochromatic media. The fitted lenses are Goerz Doppel-Anastigmat Series III No. 0 with a focal length of 12 cm and maximum aperture of 6.
